Ruth Longworth-Zurcher
I’ve always been fascinated by what it means to be human and how our individuality, temperament and experiences shape who we are today.
Although we cannot change the past, we can find new ways of living with it. We can heal from wounds and reclaim our ability to navigate life’s demands and challenges in a way that makes us feel safe and in control, allowing us to feel so much better.
Most of the time we manage to do the above without external help. However, sometimes, the past, present or future can feel so overwhelming that we can become stuck or too unwell to cope by ourselves. It is at these times that an external perspective and support can be hugely beneficial in helping us get back on track.
I am working from the Wesley centre In Malton (north Yorkshire) where I am delighted to be offering a safe and confidential space for you to explore how you can feel better.
As a Human Givens therapist I am working from a compassionate, evidence based and solution orientated approach. I belief you are the expert on yourself and working with your goals will allow you to quickly begin to feel better.
I work with children, adolescents, adults.
The Human Givens approach is a very positive approach and we will draw on your internal and external strengths and resources. We will tailor evidence based, effective strategies and tools to your specific situation and needs.
Please don’t hesitate to get in touch if you’re curious how I might be able to support you. I offer a free 20 minute initial phone call during which you can tell me what you would like to have help with. It is also an opportunity for you to ask questions and find out whether you think we might be a good fit. I look forward to hearing from you.

I am originally from Switzerland. I came to the UK in 1994 as I got married to David, an Englishman from Manchester. In 1995 we set up home in Malton with our 4, now grown up children. David used to work as a GP in Malton. After retiring from general practice he decided to retrain as a Human Givens therapist and we are delighted to now work together at our ‘Feeling Better’ Centre in Malton.
I love the outdoors, nature, hiking, doing pottery, travelling, gardening, reading, studying, and meeting up with family and friends as well as meeting new people.
I have been lucky to have been able to travel to many countries. I have found that regardless of gender, age or ethnicity we all share the same emotional needs. These needs (as identifies by the HG approach) are the needs of feeling safe, having a sense of control, being valued in our roles and responsibilities, being part of a community and having a least one person with whom we can be fully ourselves knowing we are not judged. We also thrive so much better when we have a sense of meaning and purpose.
Sadly, circumstances, life events and trauma can hinder or even stop us from being able to meet our emotional needs. I was so delighted when I found out abut the human givens approach. It draws on current knowledge of Neurobiology. It is also hugely practical with many tools and strategies- including trauma work. Very often only a handful of sessions are required for clients to feel so much better and once again feel they can lead a fulfilled life. However, I also recognise that some clients benefit from more time and sessions and the length of therapy is very much guided by yourself.
I work with adults, couples, children and teenagers.
David Longworth
I graduated in Medicine in Edinburgh in 1985 and have enjoyed working almost forty years as a doctor in a variety of specialities, mostly General Practice within the NHS.
Having also worked in acute surgical and emergency medicine settings, as well as in palliative care, I have had the privilege of accompanying many people through some of the most difficult challenges of their lives.
The Human Givens approach provides effective support for a wide range of emotional and psychological difficulties. It does this primarily by helping us recognise our emotional needs, and supporting us to meet those needs in better balance, by strengthening the use of our own innate resources and where necessary developing new skills.
Being human means that we can all get entangled or feel lost within our own lives at various times. My hope is to provide a confidential space during difficult times, to provide accompaniment, and to help find a way back through those difficulties to the spaciousness of a fulfilling life.
